FInally! An entry! This will be a general update cos I haven't posted in so bloody long!

Starting back in June... I attended a few days of Convergence, a local SF convention. I arrived on Thursday, and crashed out on the floor of [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain's room until it was time for his Dresden Files game. The game was fun, the con was fun and I'll probably be there at least a little next year.

On Sunday night, the 3rd, me and [livejournal.com profile] phineus went to fireworks at Lake Normandale. It was very nice (if INSANELY crowded), and for the first time in my life I actually saw lightning bugs. :)

Monday the fourth a bunch of us went to fireworks on the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis. Very crowded again, but I was SERIOUSLY jazzed. I got video of some of it, but I took the shots weird and I have to find a way to rotate the images for display. :P [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain and his mom, [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn and [livejournal.com profile] phineus were in attendance. Before the fireworks we had dinner at [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain's place, and the chicken-hot dogs were fantastic.

The rest of July, August and September were fairly uneventful, but I'm probably forgetting stuff. If I recall later, I'll add another post! October though... Something did happen. I, [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain, [livejournal.com profile] ataramos and [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn went up to the North Shore of Lake Superior for a weekend. That was the 7th to the 9th. We stayed at the Viking Motel, a little flytrap motel I found on the Net. I liked it, but I'm fairly sure [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain wasn't thrilled. However, despite that it was a lot of fun. We hit Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, Pallasaide Head, and a few other places, and ate at Betty's Pies and another place my brain isn't recalling the name of. I came back with pictures, which I still have to post, and a rock that is 1.1 BILLION years old. All in all, a good time.

This week has been mostly me lying around; I took three days off, two of which had nothing to do with the trip! I worked a total of two days this last week. Oh! Also, I've joined a MUD called Flexible Survival; it started as a SexMUD, but it's evolved rather oddly into Survival Adventure/Horror and Science Fiction. Its a blast. ;)

Taxes- Done! I'll be getting about $1500 Federal, $500 State and $500 property tax rebate- that last would have been $1700, but I have renters and the percentage of the house that they use whacks that down- O well, I'd rather be able to pay monthly bills. About a grand will go into the credit card, and the rest is my trip in November to Midwest Furfest. Woot!

Also done, groceries. I was within $4.00 of my guesstimate of the cost, so I'm getting better- unfortunately, no coupons. ANOTHER thing I need to get better on!

What's left is a crapload of cleaning, a bunch of boxes to break down for recycling (and for declutterization purposes), the rest of my laundry and general other stuff. My brother is coming over today and we're gonna see what we need to do to fix the door into the garage- the screws are stripping out. He thinks he has a (scary) permanent solution, but we'll see.

Bills are also due, but that's maybe 10 minutes on the net and phone.
realsorien: (Default)
I've been utterly unambitious of late, and I've gotten very little of the things I need to do around the house and otherwise done. I need to paint the garage doors, prime and paint the windowframes (can't do it til we determine what we need in terms of primer and such), vacuum the front and back rooms and my bedroom, rearrange the furniture in the front room, and a bunch of other general chores. I also need to get the synopsis for the Sunday game done, and I have something I need to do at work as well that I've been putting off.

Its not depression or anything, I just haven't DONE it. I've been feeling kinda blah, and I think it has two roots- my lousy sleep of late and the fact my allergies have been driving me crazy. Regardless, I'm going to get it ALL done this week.

... My addiction to City of Heroes hasn't exactly helped either. :P

Other than this, I've looked into fares on the Megabus to Chicago. Migod, it's cheaper than the taxi fare from Union Station to the hotel! $40.50 ROUND TRIP!! Wow. Guess how I'll be going to the con! Now all I have to do is get the money for the convention together...

Finally, I plan to make fried chicken thighs and mashed potatoes this week, probably Tuesday or Wednesday- I need to get buttermilk tho.

Last rambly bit- my car is having issues again. The antilock brakes have some kind of problem, so Dad his it to work on and I have his til its fixed. Its safe to drive, but the brakes are standard with the problem rather than antilock. O well.

... Because I have a celphone now. Its a Virgin Mobile pay-as-you-go thing, and the phone is a cheap LG Aloha, but at least it works. I decided to get one because of the fucking hoops I was gonna have to go through to just make a few fucking calls... Anyway, the number is 763-464-8614 if people need to reach me.

See people there. :)

It always seems to be that I wake early on Thursday at a convention with a neck tension/dehydration headache. Bleh. This is a tradition I can do without! So I'm awake, but I think that I'll try to get a few more hours sleep in a bit.

Once again tho, THE TEA PARTY IS IN ROOM 5225 FROM 5 TO 10 TODAY!

Hope to see people there!
realsorien: (Default)
Okay. The cookies are done and are at [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain's place with the teapot, to be transported with him, [livejournal.com profile] foeclan and [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn when they come out Thursday. The suitcase is mostly packed, the tea-party bag is set and most everything is ready for me to head out to the train later this morning. [livejournal.com profile] ataramos is driving me to the depot, and all seems go.

The only negatives are that I had a near-migraine (staved off with caffeine and excederin) all day, and my stomach is being unpleasant right now. O well, I'll make it.

In any case, I'm set! I'll see people at the con!
realsorien: (Default)
Well, I've got the oatmeal cookies done now, and I'm about halfway through the lemon tea-cookies... I've not tried one yet, but they look and smell good. I'll test the glaze tonight to see how well they'd travel if I put it on now, but I've really little hope that it'd work out. But things go apace, and I think that I'm relatively on schedule. I have to do laundry, go to the laundromat with my bedding and sleeping bag (just the bag is going to the con- I just kinda need to do the rest too), finish the cookies and get them to [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain who is transporting them for me, and repack the tea-party bag. I head for the train at 6 AM tomorrow (Wednesday), leaving the station at about 7:50 AM. I'll be at the hotel at 5 or so, and I'll get the room number posted here and on FurryMUCK posthaste. :)

And the pic? I commissioned [livejournal.com profile] cuprohastes a while back, and here's the result! http://www.furaffinity.net/view/867656/

Nifty! :)

Thanks again, Cupro!

Okay, the peanut butter cookies are done. I'm planning to get two types done tonight, and two types done tomorrow- Tonight's second batch is prolly gonna be oatmeal, because like the peanut butter cookies they don't go bad all that fast, and don't dry out too much. So things are proceeding apace, and I am SO glad I'm on vacation!

I do have to run to the store in a bit, but first, real food!

Well... Hamburger Helper. ;)
realsorien: (Default)
So. The vacation time is set, I've gotten the confirmation for the room from the Woodfield, the train tickets are set and I have the people staying with me all arranged- One on the floor ([livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn) and one in the other bed ([livejournal.com profile] bluedeer). Whats left is arranging the ride from Union Station and getting the party stuff ready. I'll arrive Wednesday the 14th sometime after 5 (depending on how I get to the hotel from Union), and I'll be heading out on Monday in the early afternoon.

A few notes- for those who follow the [livejournal.com profile] midwest_furfest LJ, You know about this: the hotel has new management, and the GM has banned the use of signage on doors OF ANY KIND. No doorsigns either on or next to the door, PERIOD. This is ass-hattery at its worst, but there is little we can do about it. Please watch my journal and I'll post the room number as soon as I have it to post. As usual, it will be on Thursday, from about 5 PM to 10 PM or til I can't stand it no more. ;) There WILL be a few signs, but likely just by the message board and the flyer table.

I have yet to get the tea, but I'm aiming for a smaller selection than in past years; there will still be a good selection- There will be a few herbals and decaf selections as well.

As to the cookies, the final decision on just what I'll be bringing hasn't happened yet. But this seems likely: Peanut Butter, Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal, Rice Crispy Bars (marshmallow kind) and something else. The tea cakes are out this year because A) they don't travel worth a damn, and B) the person that I was kinda bringing them for won't be there this year. They didn't have a huge following anyway.

See you at the con, and WATCH THIS SPACE!
realsorien: (Default)
Well, as the asthma is still being a pain I've made an appointment to go into the allergist on Thursday to try and see what's up- more than likely its the same damn thing as usual, and I'll end up on a week of Prednisone to tell my immune system to 'Knock it the HELL off!'. In party news, I should get the rest of the cleaning done today (I hope), start the brine before I go to work, bake the cake, pre-prep the cheese-tray and snacks, carve the pumpkins (with help from [livejournal.com profile] ataramos, [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn and [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain hopefully), get the beer and do whatever ELSE is left.

Tomorrow, I pick up the pumpkin pies and the cooking will prolly get into full swing at 2 or 3 o'clock- I have to check how long the damn bird will take! And then its partytime! I unfortunately will have to leave for work at 10:30, as I couldn't get the time off... But at least I'll be there for most of it. If people are still here when I have to go, I'll appoint a back-up host. ;)

I am SO glad today is trash day- we'll have room in the bin for the after-party trash this time!

Remember- 5 PM Wednesday! See you all there!

Well, here's a little life update, though nothing particularly untoward has occurred. I just figured I'd post a bit of what's been going on. Last week i took two days off at the beginning of the week so that I could have a shot at going to fireworks; that didn't pan out, but on the Fourth I ended up at Keegan's Pub with [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain, [livejournal.com profile] foeclan and [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn for dinner and drinks; Good conversation was had with good food (and in my case, beer), and afterwards we watched the episode of the new Dr. Who titled 'Blink', which was amusing.

On the 5th I helped [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain set up the Gaming suite for Convergence, thereafter having dinner with him and others (including the two mentioned above) at TGI Fridays. That night I started my abbreviated workweek, and on Saturday I was at Convergence doing 3 hours of badging in the Gaming suite. Sunday found me helping with teardown, and given that I had a good time despite being stuck in the Gaming suite and seeing literally none of the rest of the con, I'll be actually attending next year.

On Monday I went to Ratatoille with [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain and [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn, and it was a GOOD movie; I recommend it, and as usual the short at the beginning was damn near worth the price of admission. Other than that I've been playing a bit less City of Heroes, although I'm not likely to give this up til the game itself disappears.

And that pretty much sums stuff up for roughly the last two weeks. Whee!
realsorien: (Default)
Rar! I have my room reserved for Midwest FurFest! I'll arrive at the Con on Wednesday November 14th, and I'll head home on Monday the 19th- I'll either have a nonsmoking room with 2 beds, or Room #1230, which I had two years ago. Whee!

So... That means I hace the money arranged and the room, and the Con membership. All that's left is the transport. That will either be flying or Amtrak on the Empire Builder. :)

And yes, there WILL be a Tea Party on Thursday evening as usual. COOKIES!
realsorien: (Default)
I'm back. Yay! I'm currently sitting in my back room with a cat on my lap, and I think that's gonna be it for a while. :)

I'm at O'hare International right now awaiting my flight; Steve S. gave me a lift which saved me the cabfare- yay! So I'm futzing on the 'net and chatting til I get on the plane- about an hour or so. See you all later!
realsorien: (Default)
Well, the Tea Party Part 2 ended about an hour ago. I have to say the second time around was a LOT more successful! I had at least 25-35 people wander through, and a steady crowd of about 12 or so. All of the remaining cookies went, as did the last 2 1/2 gallons of water. I even got enough donations to cover a breakfast on the way out tomorrow. :)

At this poin the room is mostly cleaned up. Steve is back from the jaunt to Minnesota to pick up the last of his stuff, and has crashed out. [livejournal.com profile] khirsahdrgn and his friend are out partying and will be back, I suspect, MUCH later. [livejournal.com profile] feezlekhan went home around 3 PM or so with [livejournal.com profile] foeclan, so there are still 4 of us in the room. I've just a little packing to do in the morning.

As to the day in general... In the morning around 8:30 We (me, [livejournal.com profile] foeclan, [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain and JoMo went to Elsie's for breakfast. Not a bad place at all, tho I apparently managed to pick the one dish on the menu that DIDN'T weigh in at 5#, namely French Toast and Bacon. When we got back JoMo and I camped out at the Dealer's room to get commissions from DarkNatasha- we both succeeded! I dunno what he got, but I'll put mine up on my Photobucket site eventually. I also picked up a 'furry' shot-glass from the Artist's Alley.

Total sketchbook pieces this year: three. Low for me, but that's cool- All three were kickass.

Tomorrow I head home, heading out from here to O'Hare at about 10:30, maybe a bit earlier. I should be home before 2:30 PM. Honestly, While I love the con I DO wanna get home. I miss Luna and my own bed and lounge chair!
realsorien: (Default)
And the tradition of early-awakenings continues, this time the instigator being a full bladder. :P Steve was already up and showering, as he is driving to Minnesota today to pick up the last of his stuff- he moved to the east coast from there a few months back, and couldn't drag everything. So as I type he's en route to Minneapolis, and will be back here this evening. He'll be giving me a lift to the airport tomorrow, so I don't have to worry about cabfare for once. Yay!

So... Saturday. Good day it was, I think. I ate breakfast alone in the hotel resturant (buffet is good, the waffle wasn't, tho edible), then ran into [livejournal.com profile] foeclan and talked a while. The day thereafter was mostly spent wandering about the con. I picked up the convention T-shirt, a stuffed puffin-thingie, and two sketches- one in the 'Sorien' book by the artist-team known as 'Blotch' and one in the 'whatever' book by Gideon. THe first pic was of Sori's biped form, and the Gideon piece was of my old donkey-girl Wild Cards concept.

Just after noon I went out to lunch to the Weber Grill with Steve, [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain and [livejournal.com profile] foeclan; It was (for me) expensive, but VERY worth it. The steaks were perfectly done (I had a medium-well 16-ounce New York Strip) and I managed to continue my 'new beer each con' tradition with a 22 ounce bottle of Fat Tire Amber Ale. VERY good. :)

We got back to the con just before the Charity Auction- I had enough time to see if DarkNatasha had a slot left for a sketchbook (she didn't, but I'll check today) and to run upstairs for bribe-cookies for Kage. ;)

As I mentioned in my previous post, the auction went well. My two submissions brought $90 to the charity, and I honestly think that the Canadian pop that was added as a 'package deal' to the cookies really didn't affect the sale all that much. Maybe by $5 to $10.

The evening thereafter was spent watching college football in the room for the most part, because I had a low-grade but unpleasant headache. I finally crashed just after 9:30, and here we are today.

Tonight, there WILL be a minor Tea Party, as I still have a fair amount of cookies to 'dispose' of. I'll need to get more styro cups, but thats not a big deal. I'm sposed to be going to breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain and [livejournal.com profile] foeclan, but I may have to beg off- I have to get into the Dealer's Room right at opening if I'm to get a chance at the DarkNatasha pic.

Just so people know- I'm NOT being nuts sketchwise this year; It'll be a total of THREE with the Natasha pic, TWO if I don't manage to get it.
realsorien: (Default)
Well... Usually I'd wait til tomorrow morning for a post on Saturday, but this was cool. :)

As most know I donate a few things each year to the MFF Charity Auction. This year being no exception, I donated a bag of the cookies I made for the Tea Party, and as a gag my motorized, psycho-case Scrat stuffty/toy thing.

They both went- Kage and 2 combined the cookies with a 12 pack of Canadian pop, and the resulting set went for $50!

The Scrat... Was used by 2 to distract and confuse Kage, and when it finally spazzed out totally (when they got the nut loose) it brought in $40!

I never expected that creepy fuckin' thing to bring $40! Hell, I figgered it'd go for $5 at best!

Well thats the cool bit for today. :)
realsorien: (Default)
Yesterday the con got into full swing, with the majority of things opening between noon and 3 PM. I had breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain and yapped about gaming afterwards, then wandered about meeting people. One bit of a surprise was that, at least for a day, [livejournal.com profile] skye_bluedeer actually showed up! Initially he wasn't going to show up at all due to work, but he decided to at least make an appearance. He had lunch with me and we discussed politics and his coming business venture. :)

By about 3 PM I was getting pretty exhausted, so after swinging through the Dealer's Room and Artist's Alley I went up and napped... Or rather, went into a coma until about 8. I got back up and wandered a bit more, had a late dinner with [livejournal.com profile] nemetfox, then went back to the room around 10:30. My initial plan had been to futz on the internet a bit, but I was really still beat; so back to bed. One quick note- the con has killed 2 of the three elevators. O.o The repairmen should be here to fix at least one of them today.

Naturally, I woke up early. 4 AM early. Bleah. So here I am trying to be at least somewhat quiet and not disturb [livejournal.com profile] khirsahdrgn and [livejournal.com profile] feezlekhan... Steve crashed about the same time I did, and he's up early too- Right now he's in the shower, and I suspect he'll be going down to work out in a bit.

As for me, I'll prolly go on FM and AIM for a bit, then shower before going down for breakfast.
realsorien: (Default)
Well ,the Tea Party went well for the most part, with about 20 or so people cruising through. There was less mess than in past years, too. I've got a TON of cookies left, so there'll prolly be a Sunday party to get rid of 'em. Good thing: The DVD player that I wasn't able to use at AC was able to be used with the TV here in the room. Yay! Bad thing: While I did have an actual 'tip and donations' jar out, I got a dollar. Bleah.

Earlier in the day I spent a fair amount of time with [livejournal.com profile] nemetfox, until [livejournal.com profile] khirsahdrgn and [livejournal.com profile] mirrdae arrived with the cookies and I had to kinda start the setup of the party. As usual, I had no problems with the hotel over my signs, and only one went missing this year- the one in the lobby of my floor! Go figure. Oh, and I got my registration packet, so I miss the 'pleasure' of the lines today.

As to today... The convention officially starts. I am awake way too friggin' early once again, and relatively soon I'll head down for breakfast; prolly after a shower. I have two donations for the Charity Auction- a bag of cookies (6 of each type served at the Tea Party; that number may now increase...) and a motorized Skrat (The squirrel-rat thing from Ice Age).

And thats about it for now. :)
realsorien: (Default)
Its Thursday, and I continue my tradition of waking up too fuggin' early- In this case at 6 AM. Today's agenda is going over to Blick Art Supply to get the remaining stuff to assemble the signage for the Tea Party, talking to the hotel management about the signs, putting the silly things up and of course the Party itself. Not too much, really.

I'm expecting [livejournal.com profile] khirsahdrgn and [livejournal.com profile] mirrdae, the latter of whom has his own room, to arrive around noon. They have the cookies, so I'm hoping desperately that they don't encounter any problems. [livejournal.com profile] feezlekhan will be arriving sometime this afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain, and Steve S, who has roomed with me at past cons will arrive when he arrives. Not sure when, but I THINK it's today.

At some point here I'm gonna head down for breakfast. Not sure when.
