Today is the usual run for our biweekly campaign, currently Sylvan's Skylands campaign. What's unusual is that instead of starting at noon, we're starting around 5 PM. It'll thus be a 'short' run, but I get to get some sleep beforehand! Woo! Also, we're having tacos for dinner, so I'm bringing the lettuce, diced tomatoes and sour cream. As snacky-stuff, I'm bringing canteloupe (cut into bites) and watermelon.

Looking forward to it, and now to bed. :)

Well, next week is my birthday, and to celebrate I took the week off. So I get to loaf and be generally useless for nine days/nights. Woot. The only plans I have (so far) are to see Civil War and to game on Saturday and Sunday.

Other than that, we're close to the end of our time in the apartment. Chris is moving to just outside Green Bay, WI to live with our former roomie from the house, Anna, and I'll be moving with ANOTHER former roomie, Dave, in his house. The dates for our respective moves are slightly in the air, but he'll be mopving sometime in June, while I may be here through July and (if shit goes wrong) August.

I hate moving, but at the same time I hate paying way more than I should for what I'm getting. Especially since me alone in a two-bedroom apartment would just be too much. Other than that, life is life.

Yup, still alive. I don't pop in here as much as I used to (mostly on Google+ and Teleghram chat and such), but I'm still here and still writing. Well, TRYING to write. I managed to finish two of the bugaboo stories, but I'm still hung up on how to get to my desired ending in 'Faces', and I need to get back to working on 'Wolf's Clothing' so I can start constructing the novel from it.

Yep, planning to try writing a novel! My last attempt was a noir-horror thing starring my old detective character Michael Woodstock, and that faceplanted REAL HARD in the last NaNoWrimo I participated in. I may ressurect that someday, as I think some of the ideas are usable.

The longest thing I've ever written story-wise was about 57,000 words. It was 'Bear False Witness' during the FIRST NaNoWrimo I participated in. I may use stuff from it in the future, but it was pretty terrible in my opinion.

I think I may really have something with 'Wolf's Clothing' though, and hopefully I'll follow through. My New Year's resolution was to get stories in the pipe to be published- i.e. submitted for publication this year. I WILL do this!

Me being productive in writing, that's what's new. With input from several people (In particular Virginia Nelson (can't get the stupid thing to cite properly)) I think I've gotten 'An Unbearable Situation' to where I'm happy with it. The link will be a the bottom of this post. I'm still working on 'Hot Nights', which needs a TON of editing still. Those two stories are for the Silver & Bone writing and art group on DeviantArt, and like as not won't see pay-publication.

However, this isn't to say I'm not working on stuff to get published! I have at least 10 stories that I think are ready to go, and As my New Years resolution I WILL be submitting them to various publishers! If even one gets into print, I'll be happy. They all need to get final edit-passes and be put into proper font-and-format for that, however.

On that topic, I'm working on a story that is really close to ready. The original title was 'Lost Cabin', but I think it's final title will be 'Kiree' after the main character. Sort-of a fantasy/old west tale, it properly belongs in my 'Trickster's Universe' story-cycle. I've been poking at it with a print-copy.

Other stories I mean to finish, like the horror piece titled 'Faces' and a few other stories. So, productive!

I have one more that I've not started- it'll sort-of be a werewolf story. Sort of. It's based on a folk tale I read a LONG time ago, or rather it's inspired by such.

So glad the long-ago disaster with Hot Nights (I lost over 2000 words in a miskey-disaster) hasn't stopped me. :)

Hi all!

I'm still around, I've just been very spotty on updating on pretty much everything. I've been writing a lot (the stuff people can see is on my DeviantArt site ( http://sorien.deviantart.com/ )- The other stuff I have some hope of submitting for publication maybeIhopekindawithluck...

But we'll see. :)

Spaz and Lady are for the most part fine, though Spaz has gotten brattier- I think it's because the apartment is smaller than the house was.

Other than that, things really haven't changed a whole lot. I'll try to post here more, but no promises!
realsorien: (Default)
And another post- less than a month between! I've been peeking in here more frequently, and I'll try to do so even more often. Nothing bad has happened in the interim, though going to MFF is still vaguely iffy. I have most the money needed, but I need to get registered and get the train tickets still... And another person in the room! I can do this. I had one person ask about it, but that was like... Pre-April, and I've not heard a word since.

Worst case I get floor-flop space, which would certainly be a cheaper option! Either way I plan to be there if it is at all possible.

Things proceed apace with Chris' attempts to get support benefits from the State and Feds, and I really can't judge the progress at this point- He did get the modern equivalent of food stamps, but I dunno how long that program lasts.

Other than that, the cats are fine. Well, other than Spaz being brain-damaged. So that's it for now!
realsorien: (Default)
... Since I last posted here. Me and Chris are doing decently, living in our apartment here in New Brighton. A lot has changed, but a lot really hasn't- life goes on with the routines continuing as usual... Just with fewer people around and less space!

Changes that have taken place include [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain's Vanguard game of a year's length coming to an end, The Sunday Gaming Group going on an extended hiatus (we pick up again sometime in September from the looks of things), And my having eliminated a TON of accumulated crap from my life. 18 years in a house allows a LOT of accumulation!

Still, I miss the place. I had more space, and a lot more privacy- I can't play loud music here, for example, because of neighbors above, below and beside. I liked having my OWN washer and dryer, too.

The apartment does have SOME advantages- lower overall bills, INCREDIBLE water pressure and far less drama. Anyway, those are the highlights- I'll maybe try to post more often, but no promises. :)

I can't recall if I posted this at all here before, so I'll say it again just in case- Plague House is going to be sold, and I and all the people currently here will be moving on. There is a lot going on right now, some of which I'm not at liberty to discuss. But, of the stuff I CAN talk about, there is the progress on fixing the place up for sale.

Tomorrow, the bathroom will be done other than fiddly bits (cleaning, maybe new towel racks and such), as will the front room. We're just gonna remove the carpet there and clean the floor, as the wood is in good shape. The kitchen ceiling has been mudded, and will be sanded and likely primed tomorrow. So, there's a lot of progress!

Also, we talked to a realtor from ReMax yesterday. Looks like I should be able to get a decent price for the place, but unless I get the midrange to high amounts she provided as estimates I'll either have to short dad and my brother a bit on payback, or not pay off the whole credit card. However, no matter what things will be better than they are now.

The fix-up stuff that remains includes the new carpet in the back room and my bedroom, carpet in [livejournal.com profile] mirrdae's room, and removing the carpet from [livejournal.com profile] ataramos's room- that won't happen til people have moved out. Obviously, there'll still be a lot of cleaning to do, as well as disposing of all the crap I'm not taking with me. Oh- As suggested by the realtor, we're likely going to have to replace the furnace and central air- like as not it won't pass the city inspection, and replacing them will provide a better selling price. We'll be fixing the parking pad in back as well, but that's not nearly as much of an issue as the furnace and such.

Part of me is looking forward to all this being done, another part is terrified- this is a MAJOR change, and part of the price is effectively losing contact with several people I consider friends. Its also a terrible disruption to their lives as well, and I'm not happy about that, either- but it's really not much of a choice for me anymore.

In the end, I'll have the memories of the place, and a new home to call my own. here's hoping for relatively smooth sailing in the getting there.

Ah, another update!

This last week the prep for selling the house started to seriously get into gear. I've been sealing stains on the ceilings in preparation for painting, chipping bubbled paint in the kitchen and doing plasterwork to fix some damage (nail-holes, etc.) in the front room. Today we'll be doing the actual painting of the front and back rooms, the front hall and my bedroom. Once that's done, I'll be continue to cull possessions and such, and during the next few weeks I'll be painting the walls. There's a lot of prepwork to do, still, but once the painting is done we'll have a realtor over to see what we'll get as a price, and whether or not doing the carpet and kitchen floor will be worth it.

Other than all that, work continues to be work, with little new on that front. In the remaining news, I've gotten new (and REAL OLD) art up on my FA (FurAffinity: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/sorien/) site, and a new book- Frostbite. Well, I'm still waiting for it to get here, actually. More new books will be coming over the next few months, and I'm looking forward. I've also gotten a bunch more movies, all from Half Price Books or Pawn America- Captain America and Iron Man 2 being two of them. :)

And that's about it. I'm going to try to get the most recent Horror run typed up sometime today, and maybe try to get the as-yet unfinished writeups for Traveller and the Western Campaign done. Also, watch this space for future writeups for the Vanguard game that is upcoming!
realsorien: (Default)
First, on Friday my game was cancelled. Not a problem, we'll play again a week from this coming Friday. However, my Sunday group DID get together, and we played the Horror Campaign; Our Heroes are still trapped in the future, and things are getting worse. Our allies keep getting nailed by the Bad Guys, and we keep getting our gear stripped. Right now, Bill (my character) has been killed again, but he gets better from that (read the past entries to see why), Jackie has been captured by the vampires, and Greg has been possessed by the spirit of Dr. Beck, and temporarily has strange, quantum-physics-based powers. With these, we MIGHT have a shot at popping the darkness-bubble over Boston, fulfilling our deal to get access to a way back to our proper time!

Other than that, life is. Something screwy happened today right after work, but it's dealt with for the moment. It was rather easy to deal with, actually. We'll see if there's any fallout.

Look! Another update! (gasp!)

Anyway, its just a little one. I got the Xmas tree down today... Which is some kind of record for me, I think. The worst I've ever been was one year I took it down in April. O.o Usually its the last week of January or sometime in February that I get around to it.

As to the housework, like as not I'm going to start painting in the front room. It might be the biggest room that I have to do, but it's also simple, with very little do to in terms of patchwork and stain coverage. From there... Either my bedroom, the front hallway or the bathroom.

Beyond that, life is quiet. I did go over to Pawn America on Tuesday- they have a 2 DVDs for 3 bucks deal, so I got some new films. One of them, Black Mask 2, is enjoyably bad, but it skips and freezes a lot. So, I'll probably exchange it. I did get a few GOOD movies- Shadow of the Vampire, which is sort-of a biopic about Max Schrek, who played the lead in the silent-era Nosferatu, and Gangs of New York, which is just cool.

Tonight I return to running my Pathfinder game, and I THINK I'll be finishing up the current story. I dunno if I'll continue running it, or try something else, or if someone else wants to run something- We'll figure it out. I do have more to run in the world, but I wanna see what the players want to do.
realsorien: (Default)
We're looking into cheaply replacing the couch and loveseat in the back room with something less... Man eating. I may have found a decent couch-replacement at Savers (under $10, so), and I may get it tomorrow. Hopefully this will aid in [livejournal.com profile] zxizaraxii's skin allergy issue. I also wanted to go get yardwork done tonight, and I have dad's gas trimmer and leaf blower for the purpose- naturally, when the fucker started FIRST TRY for him, it won't even spark for me. I hate these things with a burning passion, and they hate me back. Problem is, they're better at it. (sigh) My brother and his daughter were going to come out to work this weekend- I guess it'll wait til then.

In BETTER news, I'll get the bird and groceries for the Halloween party on Friday, and the cleaning in the house I've started in on continues.

FInally! An entry! This will be a general update cos I haven't posted in so bloody long!

Starting back in June... I attended a few days of Convergence, a local SF convention. I arrived on Thursday, and crashed out on the floor of [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain's room until it was time for his Dresden Files game. The game was fun, the con was fun and I'll probably be there at least a little next year.

On Sunday night, the 3rd, me and [livejournal.com profile] phineus went to fireworks at Lake Normandale. It was very nice (if INSANELY crowded), and for the first time in my life I actually saw lightning bugs. :)

Monday the fourth a bunch of us went to fireworks on the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis. Very crowded again, but I was SERIOUSLY jazzed. I got video of some of it, but I took the shots weird and I have to find a way to rotate the images for display. :P [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain and his mom, [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn and [livejournal.com profile] phineus were in attendance. Before the fireworks we had dinner at [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain's place, and the chicken-hot dogs were fantastic.

The rest of July, August and September were fairly uneventful, but I'm probably forgetting stuff. If I recall later, I'll add another post! October though... Something did happen. I, [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain, [livejournal.com profile] ataramos and [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn went up to the North Shore of Lake Superior for a weekend. That was the 7th to the 9th. We stayed at the Viking Motel, a little flytrap motel I found on the Net. I liked it, but I'm fairly sure [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain wasn't thrilled. However, despite that it was a lot of fun. We hit Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, Pallasaide Head, and a few other places, and ate at Betty's Pies and another place my brain isn't recalling the name of. I came back with pictures, which I still have to post, and a rock that is 1.1 BILLION years old. All in all, a good time.

This week has been mostly me lying around; I took three days off, two of which had nothing to do with the trip! I worked a total of two days this last week. Oh! Also, I've joined a MUD called Flexible Survival; it started as a SexMUD, but it's evolved rather oddly into Survival Adventure/Horror and Science Fiction. Its a blast. ;)
realsorien: (Default)
This was both an eventful and uneventful period. I probably should have posted a few times in there, but one of the things I'll mention here really ruined my desire to do so. The 21st was a Monday, and marked the start of a bit of drama with a friend. That's been totally worked out to my knowledge, and the matter is settled. However, Monday the 21st was ALSO the start of my latest bout of insomnia. It was one of my longer bouts, and it finally 'broke' yesterday. 14 days of getting 2 to 4 hours of fitful sleep really, really sucks.

The 27th was supposed to be the next Sunday Group meeting, but one of the players was sick so we elected to skip rather than spread the plague.

On the 1st, my dad went into the hospital. He had an intestinal blockage, and was having some pretty severe pain. They checked him out thoroughly, and he went into surgery on the third. It went very well, and while it had been scheduled to last three to four hours he was out in less than one. As it turns out, the blockage was a sort-of skin flap- damage left from when he had a burst appendix as a little kid. So this problem has been around for more than sixty years, and just finally became dangerous.

However, despite the surgery itself going well, the recovery was NOT so good. He had a fairly severe reaction to some of the drugs used, and was disoriented and hallucinating to the point of violence. Now my dad is in his late seventies, but he's STILL a big guy- it took multiple orderlies to restrain him. To make it worse, he couldn't wear his C-Pap machine, so he basically wasn't sleeping for days on end. Fortunately, by Saturday the 5th he was fine, though wobbly. He actually looks better than he has for some time. I expect he'll be released in the next few days.

Saturday was the second run of the Dresden game, and that went well. I think it'll be a fun game, even though I have to agree that the rules at times are overwritten and are badly organized. His comment was that 'they read like stereo instructions!' For the food, I made from-scratch pancakes which were actually pretty good, other than the fact that I made easily twice as much batter as I needed. I think I still have one meal's worth left.

Sunday I saw Dad again in the morning, and other than getting REAL sick of the hospital he was fine. The insomnia finally broke, and I slept pretty well after I got home. Of course, it was also the anniversary of my losing Luna; never a good day for me.

I've got a bunch of writing for the various games to do- two Old West runs and the Horror run for the Sunday Group, and I'm going to try and turn my notes from the Dresden game into something readable as well. On top of that I've started a new series of short stories called 'The Believers'. They're urban fantasy effectively, and I think I might have something publishable in these. :)

That's about it for recent events.
realsorien: (Default)
Today I return, likely temporarily, to the Saturday Gaming Group. The game will be a short-run of the Dresden Files RPG, with an indefinite number of actual meets. I'm both looking forward to this and feeling some trepidation, if not paranoia. I'm hoping that I've changed enough for things to work out, but I'm afraid that I'm going to be treated differently than everyone else. I expect added scrutiny, but part of me worries that it'll be an 'if I blink I'll fail' kind of thing. Most of this is paranoia. I hope. But time will tell. It doesn't help that I couldn't sleep worth crap.

On a happier note, I watched the entire first season of True Blood over the last few days- I like it enough that I want my own copy of the season collection, and I want to watch the second and successive seasons. It is NOT exactly like the original, which is disappointing, but its STILL a very good series. I definitely question some of the changes (Tara being black and an almost rabidly outspoken 'wild girl'), some of the alterations to what the vampires are like (they're being portrayed as more evil and nasty overall culturally which IS a problem), and a few other little problems. I LOVE the casting of Sookie, Bill and Jason. Lafayette was PERFECT (tho they made changes to him that I dislike), and both Sam and Eric were VERY close to what I was hoping for. I'm definitely looking forward to the further episodes.

Less happy is my monetary situation. I'm VERY tight right now. I'm probably going to stoop to talking to the folks for some petty cash and help with some medical stuff (pay a small bill and get a new inhaler- it might be months before I can afford it, depending). I hate doing it, but I've little recourse. Fortunately, I'm not in any kind of danger financially, its just uncomfortable. And I'll be flat broke til my next paycheck, and immediately after too. And my debts don't rise to the level of being terrifying, just really, really annoying.

I think that's enough rambling. I don't really feel comfortable posting all this, but I'm thinking that by actually doing so some of the stress might be lessened.
realsorien: (Default)
I've been REAL lazy with updates. The last was after the Holiday Party... Uff. I actually meant to update on a daily basis! Anyway, here's whats been up.

Clearing Snow.

Drama at Work.

Reading! I've started the Sookie Stackhouse series- you know, the stuff behind True Blood on HBO. Better than I'd expected, even if there are WAY too many vampires. I also reread the Otherworld series, and the latest of the Jane Yellowrock series. There is a collection coming out in February with a previously-unpublished Dresden story, and in March the next Dresden novel comes out, as does the next Mercy Thompson book. Woot!

Gaming! Slow month here, we skipped this last Sunday due to plaerus nonattendus, but we finished the Western Campaign arc the run before. I'll try to get it written up before the next meet.

MMO's! I played City Of Heroes with the Going Rogue expansion for a month, and had fun. I'll prolly go back again at some point. However, I'm doing DC Universe Online now, and its a lot of fun. I had MASSIVE trouble initially (totally different controlset from what I'm used to, little bits of stupid in the game, little bits of stupid on my part), but now I think Its gonna last. IF Sony backs it like an MMO needs.

I get to clear snow tomorrow after work, which is gonna suck but shouldn't take too long.

And that's about it for now. Off to work!
realsorien: (Default)
Today I get the new lights for the tree, and likely I'll start decorating too. I'm going with red I think, and I'm gonna hit a pet shop to find the cat-repellent spray to keep Spaz out of the branches. Maybe he won't screw the tree up this year. I've 12.5 gifts left, most of which I still have to figure out. My brother will eventually get off his butt and tell me ideas for him and my nieces, and I think I've figured out something for the last gift for my dad, but that still leaves four or so that I don't know what to get. However... I've NEVER been this far in my shopping this early before! Woot!

On other things, life is okay. I should make another appointment with the allergist (he wanted me to make a followup), so I'll prolly set that up for next week. And I found out some cool news- several of the series I read have books coming out in January! I'll have NEW reading material soon!
realsorien: (Default)
We got a LOT of white stuff as you who follow the weather may have noticed. However, it is NOT snow as is commonly believed. This is slushie mix. Thick, heavy, WET slushy mix. All it needs is flavorings and we could open a franchise. :P

I just got the front dug out, and I'm about to make dinner. I'm going to try to get some writing done before work, but given my asthma decided to hire linebackers to kick my ass, I'm not sure if I will. I might fall asleep after I eat for a while.

In any event, the roof is still not fixed, and while I think it'll be okay, that paranoia is lurking in the background. It might have been done by now, but I talked to my dad and he was going to contact the fella that did HIS roof, who would deal with the insurance and all that crap for me as part of the deal. However... Dad forgot and went hunting. He's now in a cabin up north and there's no way to contact him. Feh.

Beyond that, I'll get groceries after work in the morning, and I've only three days til I'm on vacation!
realsorien: (Default)
Okay. Another chapter done, this one a little shorter than the others. I'm partly through chapter 10, but I'll put thatup when it IS done. Other than that, Midwest FurFest is next week. Woot! I'll be heading out on Thursday morning with [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain and [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn, and we'll be there through Monday- However, [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn is bailing on Sunday and getting a ride home with [livejournal.com profile] foeclan as I understand it. I'm only making a small batch of cookies this year- Peanut Butter and Peanut-Butter Chocolate Chip, mostly just for the purpose of donating them to the charity auction.

Other than that, I got my flu shot today and ran the car through the wash. I'll do more housecleaning before we head out as well, and I'm still waiting on further roof-fixing news. More on that when I know more.

Anyway, here's the latest chapter. Current word count including the partial chapter 10 is 24,194.

Bear False Witness Chapter 9 )

Just about time for work, and I feel pretty blah. Its the dregs of the stupid cold, I know, but its getting annoying. I haven't heard from the insurance guy yet about the lost shingles, but I expect that in the next few days- there were a LOT of claims from the wind, I expect.

In other things I got the front room mostly cleaned out, and what's left is vacuuming, steam cleaning (Friday for that) and rearranging the furniture. With the TV gone from there I needs to be sorted into more of a sitting room configuration.

I've also gotten a line on a much smaller desk for up there, but I'll not know if Its mine til next week. I really need new furniture. :P

Tomorrow I'll get the front room vacuumed and rearranged, and get going on the kitchen and back rooms. The bathroom actually will be one of the quicker jobs this time- mostly just the tiolet and the countertop.

Thursday night I'll probably go see 'How to Train Your Dragon' over at [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain and [livejournal.com profile] foeclan's place in the evening.

That's it for now. Time to get ready for the nightly grind.
