Bleah.
Its Sunday, and I'm still sick. :P I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired... That being said, I'll live. It still bothers me somewhat that in the last two years I've been getting sick a LOT more than I did in the previous decade. Not that I never got sick- I did, but the general severity seems to have ramped up on me. Ick.
Anyway, yesterday we played in
joshuwain's Vanguard campaign. Most of the run was the continuance, completion or ending of various sub-plots, and dealing with some of the real-world events that also took place in the campaign. I'm putting it behind a cut cos its HUGE. The run was titled "Life, or Something Like It", and was the 12th 'issue' of the campaign. :)
The campaign officially moved into 2005, with the Tsunami being a major feature.
The game opens with Dru patrolling with the aid of a police scanner. She picks up on a call from near St. Mary's Basilica about gunshots, and another concerning a fire in a former textiles building nearby. she checks the shooting-call first, at first finding nothing- the police then arrive, and shortly thereafter Dru flies up, spotting a person hiding huddled by the parking ramp. She finds a young man in his teens, with gunshot wounds and marks as if he'd been beaten.
Dru searches the area, eventually yelling 'Stop, police!' to see if anyone runs- instead, a window opens in a nearby apartment, and the occupant tells her of a red 2003 cadillac which was chasing the boy Dru had located earlier- she lobbed a can of vegetables at the car, breaking its windshield. Dru passes this on to the police, and shortly thereafter remembers the fire, proceeding to the site.
Once there, she has her suspicions confirmed- the building was the origin point of both the boy and the car, and the place was torched to cover evidence- It turns out that the boy had escaped a slave-prostitution ring...
My character Goblin, along with
danshrugs Poundstone and
ataramos' character Kaya travelled to the Tsunami zone with other heroes to help in the recovery efforts- In doing so, I encountered a child of western features, who had amnesia... This boy turned out to be Stormlord, a hyperpowerful weather-controller supposedly killed back in August, gametime. He was 're-aging', having apparently regrown from nearly nothing. Now he thinks he can't die. Great.
Goblin, after he regained his memories with prompting, told Stormlord: ""Look. You OWE me. I could have easily killed you again, or turned you over- I didn't. I'm letting you go. There's a PRICE for this- You're not going after Blazar (the being that 'killed' him), and you will never create a storm-event like that again (he ramped Hurricane Ivan past anything ever seen). He sort-of agreed; he said he'd not go after Blazar. This IS a good thing- If those two fought, the damage could be continental...
While all this went on, back in Minnesota the rest of the team received a visit from some of our allies from the Hurricane Runs, the Troubleshooters. They stuck around at the mansion our team stages from, giving a few suggestions to our inventors, Mr. Parkers (
mirrdae ) and Dr. Chimera (
foeclan ).
Dru, our hyper-dryad, also had a guest, who apparently knows our amnesiac teammate from when she first 'sprouted'. She tries unsuccessfully to convince Dru to come with her as she heads to Edinborough University in Scotland. She and the Troubleshooters are long gone before Goblin, Poundstone and Kaya get home.
Of course, more trouble ensues with the regathering of the team. Goblim prepares for her lawsuit (she was wrongfully terminated), Dru continues investigating the slave-prostitution ring, Poundstone is hired to dig a 2 mile deep borehole for the geo-energy research company Kineticorp, and Mr. Parkers completes one of his inventions, Light-amplification glasses that double as sunglasses.
Time passes- Dru gets a few minor leads in her investigation, and begins stsking out bus depots posing as a runaway to lure the kidnappers. Goblin's case starts and goes well- at the midpoint break, however, things go awry...
A strange whirr is heard, and a WWI biplane, painted like the Red Baron's plane buzzes above the streets; on its second pass, its wings rotate, and it lands V/TOL-style, and it becomes that the plane is some kind of jet- As it lands Goblin charges down to deal with any threat, calling the rest of the team via Mr. Parkers on her celphone.
She reaches the scene and confronts a fellow dressed in a modified WWI flightsuit, who is just coming out of a jewelry shop that he's apparently robbed- she tries to disable his plane, but fails, getting an electrical shock for her troubles. The villain tosses several round devices into the building, (glossing a bit here) telling Goblin that there are three people tied up inside...
Goblin rescues the people, getting out mere moments before the explosion; she sets them down and once again charges after the criminal, who it lifting off in his bizarre machine. She leaps, but misses and ends up eating pavement- only her pride being truly hurt. Dru and Dr. Chimera arrive at this time, but its too late. The feind has flown, leaving an Ace of Spades as a calling-card...
...On a good note, Goblin wins her lawsuit. Now the appeals begin...
Later... Dru continues her investigations, firming up her developing police-connections and draws Dr. Chimera and Kaya into the search. They end up encountering a strange, flowing/morphing creature at the St. Paul Greyhound depot- he is also seeking the prostitution ring, but is rather more... direct... in the methods he plans to use to stop them... While Dru confronts thic creature, Kaya, still watching things on a rooftop, spots what looks like an abduction- she shouts to the others, and gives chase!
All present charge to the apparent abduction-van- Kaya stops it cold with her kinetic control, Dr. Chimera ramps his strength up after landing on the roof and crimps the doors shut, and Dru pursues- Unfortunately, so does the morphic thing...
Conflict ensues when the thing tries to get to the abductor- he fails, getting into a fight with Dru, ripping her with vicious claws- sheresponds with a new power- solar blasts! But misses. Dr. Chimera tears the roof off the van, finding an unconcious girl and the driver, who shoots him for his troubles... In the end, despite an attempt by the dark creature to blow the van up, the heroes prevail, catch the kidnapper and save the girl- however, the creature, referred to as 'the DarkHeart' by the police escapes, and the kidnapper dies in custody.
Anyway, yesterday we played in
