7th Sea Campaign!

A new game! We're starting a 7th Seas campaign run by Ben, kind-of replacing the Werewolf campaign (which I STILL hope comes back someday...) Tonight was mostly character generation. We have three of the characters so far, as Mr. G. was not on hand tonight. The dramatis personae so far is as follows:
Illyana Kiralov- My character. She is an Ussuran shapechanger (read: Russian) who's family is fallen nobility from the vicinity of the Azov Forest. At the moment her family are amongst the Smerdi (merchant class, barely above the peasantry), operating in conjunction with several other small families as traders. Six months ago, Illyana found herself in a Tibesti caravan, with no idea how she got there- she made some friends, but what happened to get her there is still a mystery.
Prince Erik Gjeldheimsson- Scott L. A Scandanavian prince and runecaster, he has allowed the wanderlust to take him on journeys across the world to find adventure and fortune.
Zora of the Pirate Isles- Amy L. A pirate of the Rogue Isles, she has made her way north from her usual haunts to avoid the consequences of certain unnamed activities, and is currently without ship, crew or cargo.
The tale begins in the city of XXX, on the northern coast of Eisen in the province of Posen. The young pirate Zora has taken up roost for the moment in the Stag's head Inn, it being close to the harbor and not the worst of the lot if available inns. In the harbor, Prince Erik's ship has docked, and his plan is to leave his kinsman here in this place, to seek his fortunes in adventure. Our third hero, Illyana, has also arrived, but she comes from inland where the Tibesti caravan she'd been traveling with has stopped in the merchant's quarter of the city.
Both Erik and Illyana find themselves at the Stag's Head, Illyana arriving mere moments after the big Vestin noble. She proceeds to the bar, and attempts to order akavit... And gets a mug of ale. "Ah, I should have known better..." She says. She then gets herself a room. Erik managed to get ale for himself, but when he sees Illyana get her room, he tries to get one as well... But doesn't speak the language! Illyana drops her possessions in her room, and thereafter assists Erik: "He would like a room as well. Your BEST room..." The taverner hesitates, then takes a different key down from the rack for Erik, who massively overpays.
Zora, who marked the wealth of Erik when he entered has also approached the bar. She talks with Erik as well, the innuendo running thick through the entire talk. Erik is enjoying the attention, being between two exotic young women is hardly a bad place to be! "So are you from around here?" Asks Erik of Zora. "Do I look like I'm from around here?" She decidedly doesn't, not being nearly dour, pale and careworn enough. "Ah... No. You don't. So where are you from?" asks Erik. "South," is the reply. He mulls that, and Illyana asks, "What brings you here then? I know your kin sail these waters..." "This is my first time here. I mean to see the sights!" Erik replies. "Ah. I have already been 'seeing the sights' but I do not seem to recall them..." Erik blinks and thinks on that enigmatic comment, then says, "I am... Sorry to hear that."
While they've been talking, the taverner brings out two roast chickens with potatoes for the spendthrift Erik. He's decided that being nice the the rich man is a good policy! Being sharing is the norm for his people, Erik gestures to his companions to help themselves, which they do. The conversation shifts to be mostly between Erik and Zora, just after Erik orders two bottles of the 'house best' as translated by Illyana. Both he and Illyana appreciate the heady brew, it being FAR stronger than ale, and closer to what Illyana was after in the first place.
"So why are you here then?" He asks Zora. "I'm here to...Trade." She says. "Oho! And what goods do you have for your trade?" Zora deigns not to answer, becoming rather cagy. "Would you wish to discuss this in private?" He asks. "Yes." "Your room or mine?" He asks with a grin. "Yours," is the answer, and with Illy watching and wondering the pair head to Erik's room. Illyana simply watches the room, enjoying the fact that she is in a building and NOT in a swaying wagon or sat upon the wet ground around a sputtering campfire.
Once sequestered, Erik becomes all business. "So. What is it that you have to trade?" He asks. "Well, actually I've nothing with me..." She replies. "So you need a vessel to fetch your goods?" "Not exactly that, either." "So you've no ship and no goods, yet you want to trade?" He asks. "Well, I'm rather like you. I take from the rich and give to the poor." Erik replies, "I never said I did that! I take from those who have and give to me!" She smirks at that. "So... You're a pirate then?" He asks. She nods, leaving shortly thereafter. This gives Erik time to try and get his 'land legs' under him.
Zora heads to the second floor of the tavern, where there are games of chance, cards, dice and the like, being played- she aims to try her luck, but merely breaks even. Eventually getting bored with this, she happens to spot Erik as he heads out of the tavern. She decides to shadow him, to see if anything interesting (and/or profitable) might be in his path. However, Illyana spots HER starting to follow, and decides to join the train! Unfortunately, Illyana isn't practiced at trailing people, and is spotted by Zora, who tries to act innocent- she heads away from Erik's path, who didn't see here but knows someone followed him out, until Illyana heads back inside. Then, she resumes her tracking.
Unfortunately for her, Erik isn't heading into anything particularly interesting or profitable- he's just going back to his ship to say farewell, share some of the bottle he got from the taverner and make sure he's gotten everything squared away. When she sees this, she spends the rest of the evening wandering the town, visiting various taverns and inns and partaking in more games of chance. Erik, for his part, returns to the Stag's Head, has an enjoyable night and wakes the next morning with a young Eisen lass on his arm.
Erik has a bit of a mystery upon his waking; aside from the girl, there is a large sack in his room, which contains a great deal of coin as well as a rolled scroll! Unable to read it, he packs it and the money up- he apparently did a lot better than he recalled at the gaming tables the previous night!
Illyana is the first of the trio to be up and about, getting breakfast in the main room of the tavern. Zora is also up early, and is already out of the tavern by the time Erik exits his room. He goes to the bar, and before he can even try to say something he's given a large breakfast of bacon and bread! he tries to get it wrapped for the road, but of course the taverner can't understand him. Illyana once again assists in translation, and shortly the meal is bound in a cloth sack.
Leaving Illyana behind, he heads into the street, preparing to hit the road and find the adventure he craves. He encounters Zora, and shows her the scroll- unfortunately, she can't read Eisen either! Neither know that Illyana can... Erik looks around, and hollers at a passing citizen, who quails at the gigantic foreigner yelling at him! Zora smooths it over, at least a little, and gets the man to read the document. As it turns out, the winnings were even bigger for Erik: the scroll is the deed to a house in the city of Freiburg!
Well, that settles Erik on his first destination, and Zora decides to come along- maybe there'll be something interesting there for her as well. Freiburg IS the most cosmopolitan and open city in nearly all the known world after all. As their destination is upriver, Erik decides to see if his kin are still in port. They are, and as he's the captain still, has them head upriver with him and Zora- the ship is far faster and more comfortable than walking!
Illyana is also heading to Freiburg, but separately- she has no idea where the big northerner and the piratical Zora are off to, and really, this WAS just a chance meeting. Her hope is that in this most accepting of cities that there might be someone able to tell her how she ended up with the caravan, and why. She gathers her things, heads out of town and shifts to the form of a great, grey wolf, and runs.
For both Illyana and those on the ship, the weather is unpleasant. Grey skies dog the travelers, with a slow, wet drizzle casting a pall over the entire river. Erik decides that this won't do, and uses his skill with the runes to shift the weather- Soon its a cleaner, true rainstorm with a wind that hastens their passage. Unfortunately, this only lasts for an hour or so, returning once again to the grey skies and drizzle. Still, it eventually does pass, so perhaps his act sped the passage of the poor weather.
As they travel, Zora climbs into the rigging to enjoy the rain and the wind; she IS from the sea, after all. While she's up there, she spots the great wolf loping along the river in the woods, roughly pacing the ship- she points this out to Erik, who has one of his crewmen come over with a bow, thinking that there was an opportunity to get a pelt! Not knowing that this is a person, not an animal the crewman takes the shot, but they're out of range. The shaft thuds into the ground behind Illyana, its force for the most part spent. Illyana DOES notice this though, stopping and looking back at the shaft. She decides not to chance another shaft from the boat and fades into the woods like a ghost. Those aboard the ship do spot her occasionally, and from how the beast reacted to the arrow they suspect something unnatural about it...
And that's where we left off for the night. Not a bad start!
