After the weekend I've now returned to work. Yay. I've gotten a new little problem tho- They have us (or want us to at least) resetting steam-valves. LIVE, HIGH PRESSURE steam valves on the building's heating system. Now, last time I checked I was a security guard, not an engineer, and I've never received an engineering certificate, boilerman's licence or a membership in that union. So why do they want US doing it? Prolly to save money.

My account manager, eager to please the client has said 'its in the post orders, so we do it'. I've said 'Bullshit', and I've left a message with the main office to see if this can be fixed. If not, I'll be going to the union. THis is the first and only time that I've found a use for the union... I just hope I don't have to go that far, and that it works if I do hae to go to them.

At to other things, the Halloween/Thanksgiving Turkey Feed is on the 31st as usual- Help would be appreciated of course. The menu is as per previous years, but I've a few things still up in the air. The worst part will be cleaning the house- Its a bad day when the kitchen will be the EASIEST part... O.o

And that's about it for now.

You know, a confidencial call to OSHA or the Department of Labor would probably help make the decision quicker. You just want to be careful not to make too much of a fuss, otherwise, when OSHA walks in, you'd be pointed out for it. Just make sure to follow the directions about adjusting the valves EXACTLY. The last thing you want to do misadjust a high pressure valve. Just so you know, if a valve blows, the high pressure steam it handles is in the high hundreds of degrees and will expand in a wave much faster than you can run. If it pops, you'd be cooked where you stand.

No worries.

If I'm not mistaken, the Dept. of Labor requires you to have at least a specials license before you can touch a boiler.

I know enough about high pressure steam to know that I don't wanna have fuck-all to do with it. Hence my less than enthusiastic response to their 'request'. Its not a boiler tho- its a city-steam system. Not that that makes any difference with how thoroughly parbroiled you'd be...

Also, this may be a violation of the union operating engineers for the building. I know that in my union (local 70, operating engineers) they'd be a little ticked off if the management tried to have someone not qualified tinkering with it.

Yea, high pressure steam is really cool. I was told that 1 POUND of water has enough potential energy to blow apart a cinderblock wall. Now that's fun!!
