I just got woke up from a sound sleep by one of the managers at work. Good news and bad news- Good, there's an account for me. Bad, its Monday-Friday on second shift, with weird hours, in St. Paul. She told me that if I refused what they offered me it could be construed as a 'voluntary resignation', and I could be out of work. I said I'd take it, but I wasn't happy. I called the site manager, and he was a fair bit more helpful, telling me that it wouldn't be an issue getting me back on third shift in the near future somewhere. However, the position actually doesn't open up til the 15th. So, next week would just be 3 days of training.

Now, right now I feel terrible, mostly from being overtired and the adrenalin-surge from waking up by being startled (the reason why I sometimes turn that fucking phone off!), but also because I'm kinda screwed. I called the union, and the rep there said to take the posting, but get something in writing stating that I want something third shift to ASC, so there's a record.

After that, the manager from ASC called again, saying that there was a post open in Minneapolis, but it was three days (Friday-Sunday) on second shift, two days on night shift (Monday-Tuesday). This would strip away my getting together for gaming, AND its a swing-shift... AND I'd have to take a $1 an hour pay-reduction! This last is bullshit, as with the union they CAN'T reduce my pay-rate regardless of the account. I've done a swing before, and they eat you alive over time. So I turned it down and I'm sticking for now with the first posting.

I mentioned to her that I was originally planning to take next week off if I could, and she talked with the site manager, and so next week I'm off. I'll train the following week, then I'll start the actual post the week after that. Notably, I'm NOT happy. Its going to run me in the order of $160 a month in gas alone to commute to this, and the hours frankly suck.

As soon as possible, I'm outta there. I have to run out to the account on Monday to fill out a background-check form...

Its so nice to be punished for having been sick. As I mentioned in a previous post, that's why I was pulled from my last permanent post, because they thought I was sleeping. This year just gets better and better. :P

I just participated in my first strike. Ugh. Not that the strike event was bad, no- that went fine. But being a creaky, arthritic bugger running on two 2-hour blocks of sleep in the preceding 30 hours was NOT so fun. The Pickets went well, with the Teamsters and the Carpenter's Union supporting the strike and refusing to cross the lines; we walked throughout Minneapolis as well, going to various buildings that were selectively targeted as high-profile and likely to have a significant amount of leverage with the security companies. Right now I'm home, having been at 8 of the 12 hours of the planned events- After the 6+ hours of walking in the cold I could barely walk, though energywise I was fine. In any event, here's hoping that this sends the right message and we get somewhere at the next talks.

Oh- My union is SEIU Local 26. Google it if you wanna know more, and check the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and St. Pau Pioneer Press websites for more information as well. We should be on the local news tonight too.
