Whee. Last night, actually this morning FUN struck once again at work. Some retarded asshat started a fire in one of the outside trash cans for me to find. Joy. So, I got to run back and forth with coffeepots full of water from a nearby suite (luckily they had a door to the outside) to put the damn thing out.

To give an idea of HOW cold it was- the lid on the coffeepot FROZE SHUT as soon as I took it outside, and my shoes were freezing to the ground pretty much instantly when I stepped in spilled water. O.o

But... I got it out. It wasn't a big deal, but if I'd not had the people in that suite on hand, I'd have had to call the fire department- I couldn't find an extinguisher anywhere nearby.

Bleah.

While I was reading this I was wondering why you didn't just grab an extinguisher. Then I got to the last line.

It's always a good idea to know where the nearest extinguishers are at work. A couple years ago, I had the dubious honor of being selected as one of the fire wardens or whatever for my part of the floor on which I work. I've still received no definitive answer as to what that actually entails, aside from making sure everyone in my group (all 2 of us) actually leaves their office when the fire alarm goes off.

Anyway, as part of this wondrous duty, I ended up with an 'emergency kit' which is a backpack that's hanging on the back of my office door and contains a flashlight, first aid kit, and a manual with some phone numbers and floorplans. One of the first things I did was to look at the plans to find where all the fire extinguishers are.

Of course, many of the few that're anywhere near me are locked inside secure facilities that I can't get into. Yay!

My first thought was, "Why didn't you turn the trash can over and smother the flames?" Was it one of those huge trash bins? Or were you too frantic to think of that?

It was a decorative thing apparently made of concrete with a metal inner can. Tipping it wasn't an option. :P
