I've been REAL lazy with updates. The last was after the Holiday Party... Uff. I actually meant to update on a daily basis! Anyway, here's whats been up.

Snow.

Clearing Snow.

Work.

Drama at Work.

Reading! I've started the Sookie Stackhouse series- you know, the stuff behind True Blood on HBO. Better than I'd expected, even if there are WAY too many vampires. I also reread the Otherworld series, and the latest of the Jane Yellowrock series. There is a collection coming out in February with a previously-unpublished Dresden story, and in March the next Dresden novel comes out, as does the next Mercy Thompson book. Woot!

Gaming! Slow month here, we skipped this last Sunday due to plaerus nonattendus, but we finished the Western Campaign arc the run before. I'll try to get it written up before the next meet.

MMO's! I played City Of Heroes with the Going Rogue expansion for a month, and had fun. I'll prolly go back again at some point. However, I'm doing DC Universe Online now, and its a lot of fun. I had MASSIVE trouble initially (totally different controlset from what I'm used to, little bits of stupid in the game, little bits of stupid on my part), but now I think Its gonna last. IF Sony backs it like an MMO needs.

I get to clear snow tomorrow after work, which is gonna suck but shouldn't take too long.

And that's about it for now. Off to work!

Phooey!

I missed yesterday's daily! O well, it was an uneventful one anyway.

Today though... It started drizzling while I was at work. Being as this adds to the problem of ice and snow on the roof (and oddly also helps with that situation), I went up there this morning and dug a trench in the snow and much around the periphery of the flat roof, then salted the hell out of that area. Hopefully, the roof will drain better now, and the section where the flat roof abuts the peak won't flood, freeze and get inside. By the time I was done my back was screaming- shoveling wet snow sucks.

Before next Friday I need to clean the house some- nothing real hard, just a general picking-up-of-things and the usual sweeping and vacuuming. The party approacheth! I'll be going out today and ordering the subs from Cousins in a bit- four of them. There will be a LOT of food, and more than likely a lot of leftovers! I definitely don't mind that. As usual I'm gonna recruit people to help get the munchies (chips, pop, cheese and such), and I should make those calls tonight too.

Lastly, in an odd twist of fate I'm back on City of Heroes- Going Rogue was on sale on Steam for $10, and given that the price includes a month of play, I couldn't pass on it. I'm having fun in Pretoria with my new Energy Melee / Willpower Brute. :)

Oh- the New Years plans aren't fixed as of yet, but I should know whats up tonight, and we may be gaming in the Sunday Group this weekend. Woot!

About a half hour ago I got back inside from clearing snow off the roof. I had ice dams building up, and had to get the snow off them so they'll melt clear. The snow up there is deeper than the vent pipes, so I'll prolly have to go up again to make sure those are cleared as well. I'll do that tomorrow. [livejournal.com profile] mirrdae assisted in getting the ladder in place after I discovered that the snow rake wasn't worth a crap with the heavy, sticky snow up there. I salted the dams (screw the lawn!), and hopefully they'll break up over the next few days. I think in the future, regardless of the inconvenience, I'll clear the snow right when it first comes down. :P

Other than that, today is quiet. I'll probably shower here in a bit, and I get to work later. Yay.

Naturally, after that huge meal I ended up passing out. From 10:30 til 2:30 I was thoroughly dead to the world. Thereafter I got up... And promptly fell back asleep in my chair for several more hours. When I finally DID get up, I chatted on FurryMUCK for a bit, then got groceries. And guess what- we got MORE snow! :P

Honestly, I love having a white Christmas. I really do, but this... Its kinda nuts. We're in record snowfall territory now. At least the snow blower SERIOUSLY kicks ass now. If I get chains for the tires on it, it'll kick even MORE ass. In about 45 minutes I cleared my driveway, got rid of the ridge the plow left there as well, cleared the ridge at the Monroe end of the alley, cleared the sidewalk and then cleared my neighbor's driveway and walk as well! [livejournal.com profile] foeclan... You DO have enough area to warrant a snow blower. Seriously. Maybe not one the size of mine, but the next size down- it REALLY helps a ton.

I'm gonna head to bed shortly, then this afternoon I'll head to the folks for the family get-toigether... And prolly move more snow. Bleah.

Ugh.

I got off work and came home, and immediately went and dug us out with the show blower. Migod- done in 45 minutes! When that stupid thing decides to work, it really works! [livejournal.com profile] iatro finished up by shoveling off the front steps, as I was fried by that point. Right now I'm doing laundry, and as soon as this first load is in the dryer and the second is in the washer, I'm going to bed.

I'm sore now, and I'm gonna be more sore later. Oh well- I made a good breakfast at least. French toast and sausage links with orange juice.

My brother dropped off the snow blower tonight- he and dad rebuilt the carbuerator and cleaned everything out, so it should run fine now. He blew out the bit of the back that wasn't done and it didn't choke or stall once, so I have hopes! I also found out the gearing DOES work, so it'll be easier to get it around front if I need to.

In other news, I have tonight off! Woot! For my evening, I shall sit around and do very little, though I'll get the kitchen cleaned up some and maybe start packing up the paperbacks that currently form strange pillars and mounds in my room. ;)

As to the Xmas stuff, 2 1/2 still en route in the mail. At least none of them need to be here by the 24th! One or two should get here tomorrow at least.
realsorien: (Default)
If you've not heard, a SECOND snow emergency started tonight. So, no parking on either side of snow emergency routes tonight. Tomorrow, no parking on the even sides of residential streets and no parking on parkways, and on Wednesday, when all this shit may start over with even MORE snow coming, no parking on the odd side. In case I have this slightly wrong (the even/odd stuff I'm sure of), call 612-348-7669 for the recorded message.

Time for me to get ready for work- that is all.

These days I'm trying to post at least something here daily... Not that I'll always succeed, but I'm making the attempt. I now have a funky rack in my front room in which [livejournal.com profile] iatro's snakes are in. It's effin' HUGE, but... It for some reason works out. Maybe because it isn't bearing all of the resentment I'd built up for that damn desk. ;)

I may have to go at the roof with the snow-rake. There's a LOT up there. Its not a safety issue, but with that much up there I WILL get ice dams. Maybe I'll get it when dad stops out this week and I can have a bit of help with it.

Sunday, after I got back from the 11 hour shift I went out for food at Keys Cafe with [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain, [livejournal.com profile] mirrdae and [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn; I pigged out, as usual, and I think a good time was had by all in general. After that, I actually slept- fitfully, but I DID get some actual rest. Today I woke after about 4 hours... So I'll probably nap later.

The street is FINALLY clear. Mostly. At least safely navagable. This is one of the most piss-poor snow-clearance jobs I've ever seen in Minnesota. I know the management of the buildings I work at will have words for the city- our loading docks and garage were plowed in... And they're not supposed to EVER cut off building access. Its a safety issue as well as a business issue, after all.

I may be making some pretty hefty changes in 'Bear False Witness'- I may totally ditch the 'Great Desert' idea. Given the location, I just can't make it work in my head. But I've a rather more spectacular idea to replace it that could work, and would be a far more obvious example of a deific temper tantrum. ;) In other writing, I'm playing with a short story to explain just that event, and another idea is sitting on my laptop screen waiting to be played with.

Stopping, cos I'm rambling all over.

Aaigh.

I've got the back dug out, which is the first pass. I'll have to do it again later, as the snow is STILL coming down and probably won't stop til well after 8 PM. From what I've seen, we've gotten about 8-10 inches where I am. Minneapolis proper has about 7.1 inches or so.

The front is NOT done yet. I'm kinda hoping one of the neighbors has a bout of self-loathing and decides to run their snow blower up and down the length of the sidewalk. :P

I honestly don't know if I'll be able to get in to work tonight- its pretty bad. The Snow Emergency was declared while I was working on clearing the back, but its Snow Emergency routes and alleys first. Tomorrow is even side, which means me and [livejournal.com profile] khirsahdrgn have to have our cars moved one way or the other by 8 AM tomorrow.

At least if I DO get in to work, I get to park in the garage.

Snow.

We've gotten about 5 inches so far, IF Northeast Minneapolis has gotten the same as southern Hennepin. I suspect we've gotten more than that. We're supposed to get between 9 and 16 inches before midnight, and its also supposed to go negative temp before 8 PM tonight I'll be digging ups out later this morning, even though I'll prolly have to do it again tomorrow morning. Bleah.

They've NOT declared a snow emergency (which triggers parking restrictions for plowing that vary from day to day over three days), but there is NO way that they won't before midnight. So likely tomorrow will be parkways and alleys, Monday will be Even sides of streets, and Tuesday will be odd side.

I'm awake now because the carbos and booze coma'd me out after I got home from the restaurant, kinda as was easily predictable. It was worth it though. :)

I just hope my remaining deliveries can get here, if they're due today. At least I get my white Christmas!

I crashed last night around 3, and woke up at about 6:30. There's a fair bit of snow out there, and in a few hours (when people here are awake) I'll go out and use the blower to clear the back. After that, I'll either shovel out the front or see if I can't recruit someone to do it for me. In the meantime, I've started on the first editing pass of the novel; mostly I'm making some notes on the printout and thinking about how to expand things. There are a LOT of little bugs and odd bits that fail to precisely fit, so this is going to take a while.

Also... I think that my cough might not be my asthma. It was STARTED by the cold and the asthma, but I think I've got a touch of acid reflux. I have a slight burning sensation at the top of my stomach, and the coughing happens even if my breathing is utterly clear. So I may go to the doctor about it, after maybe trying the over-the-counter version of prevacid. I'm not throwing up in my sleep or anything, so it might be just some damage from all the coughing... Which causes more coughing. Biology sucks, sometimes.

Other than digging out and editing and such, I may do a little housecleaning as well. Plus I really need to get some actual sleep- I do work tonight after all.
realsorien: (Default)
We got a LOT of white stuff as you who follow the weather may have noticed. However, it is NOT snow as is commonly believed. This is slushie mix. Thick, heavy, WET slushy mix. All it needs is flavorings and we could open a franchise. :P

I just got the front dug out, and I'm about to make dinner. I'm going to try to get some writing done before work, but given my asthma decided to hire linebackers to kick my ass, I'm not sure if I will. I might fall asleep after I eat for a while.

In any event, the roof is still not fixed, and while I think it'll be okay, that paranoia is lurking in the background. It might have been done by now, but I talked to my dad and he was going to contact the fella that did HIS roof, who would deal with the insurance and all that crap for me as part of the deal. However... Dad forgot and went hunting. He's now in a cabin up north and there's no way to contact him. Feh.

Beyond that, I'll get groceries after work in the morning, and I've only three days til I'm on vacation!

Well, the LAST time I posted I mentioned that I'd gone to the ER and such. To update that situation, everything is now coming out all right. And that's enough of that.

Sunday the 31st we played the 7th Seas campaign, and a good time was had by all. We played off by a week due to the GM not being available on the regular day, and we play next on the 21st. I have all these points to spend, and can't decide on what...

Monday night (February 1st) I realized that I had to take the trash and recycling out. Rather than rattle-and-bang my way down the stairs and out the garage, waking [livejournal.com profile] khirsahdrgn and [livejournal.com profile] mirrdae, I decided to go down the back steps. This was a mistake, as I've not shoveled them out for some time, and they're a mass of snow and ice. The inevitable happened, and I now have a bruise and nasty scrape on my shoulder. I'll dig them out sometime this week so that this doesn't happen again.

Thursday we did the Furry Night Dinner thing, eating at the Blue Fox Inn. Philly cheese steak and onion rings and bheer. Yay!

On last Friday, I made a big batch of chili and had [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain, [livejournal.com profile] foeclan and [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn over. It was a good night, and we gabbed about various things while watching "Varan the Unbelievable", one of the poorer Toho Kaiju entries from the late fifties.

Saturday had me chiseling out the snow and near-ice on the front walk. Yick.

Monday, I got two of the three movies I ordered- War of the Gargantuas and The African Queen. The first of these was a 'prestige' package, including Rodan and a documentary on Godzilla- very cool. The copy of The African Queen I got... Well, it seems to be a Japanese-language edition, at least from the packaging. It DOES have the English vocal track, so I don't care- but it IS a little weird. That wasn't mentioned when I ordered it! Remaining to arrive is Frankenstein Conquers The World, of which War of the Gargantuas is actually the sequel.

We had yet another big snowstorm too- I think here in the Cities we got about 6-8 inches, but I know that other areas got 11 inches or more. I spent the morning digging out the front, doing the bak with the assistance of [livejournal.com profile] mirrdae. As an additional bonus, Mirr let me know that the drain in the washroom was backing up some- fortunately this time we caught it before it flooded to the hallway! I'd scheduled Roto-Rooter to come out and clear the thing, but as the driver couldn't get into the alley (and barely understood English- I tried to have him bring the drain-snake in through the upstairs, but he seemed to think I was continually talking about bringing the VAN around) that's been rescheduled for tomorrow morning.

That brings us to now. I've a trio of pictures of out front, and here they are:

I think that this Friday I'll do another bad-movie gathering, showing Frankenstein Conquers the World and the documentary. Just have to decide on the food!
realsorien: (Default)
It's snowing again, and it looks like we've gotten at least another 2 inches or so. No idea when it'll stop, but I'll dig out this afternoon regardless. In a related bit, I found out our near neighbors in 710 36 1/2 Ave. NE apparently are gone, having done the 'bail in the dark' trick. No big deal you say? Well... They were the owners of a little black cat that we've seen in the neighborhood for some time- It looks like Luna did, but jet black. Anyway, they apparently found it too hard to take care of, and left it behind.

Outside. With no food. Declawed.

There is a shelter on the case, and as they know it hides out in their garage they'll be trying to live-trap the poor thing and get it out of the weather, and to a new home. However, the people who now own the house (a bank I think) have changed the locks and don't seem real helpful. So I'm keeping an eye out and have let the currently present roomies know the situation.

Hopefully it'll be caught and helped.

I really, really hate people like this.

If they don't catch it, I'll start putting food out for it. I know it frequents the yard. I'd put food out for it NOW, but as they're baiting the trap with food in the garage to get it used to eating in it, they asked me not to til they know they'll have no more luck.
realsorien: (Default)
I left for work last night and there was about 4" down by that point. Right now, there's at LEAST twice that, but I've not checked to see just how much. I know that it's at the level of the undercarriage of my car though. I've gotten us dug out, but while the alley is clear to Monroe Street, the streets haven't even had one plow-pass through yet. We ain't goin' nowhere today.

Not that I'd planned to. :)

So now I'm unwinding, and likely later I'll have to lather-rinse-repeat on the snow-removal. At least the 'new' blower works! Its got a fuel flow issue, but I was still able to get the back done with it.

Tomorrow, if the local roads get at least a pass through by the plows, I'll be going to the folks for Xmas. Happy Holidays all!
realsorien: (Default)
We got NUKED with a snowstorm... I think we've gotten at least 8" so far, and its still coming down! While I hate the idea of digging out, it IS pretty out there. I think I'm not gonna dig out til it stops, or at least I'll wait til it slows down.

Not that this will shut the state down or anything. Its just snow. ;)

SNOW!!!

Hm. Well, it seems some higher power REALLY didn't want me at work tonight- we'll have nine inches of snow by midnight. :P

I really could have appreciated that more BEFORE Christmas.
realsorien: (Default)
Well, the storm hit here about an hour after I got to work. As I enter this, there is at least two inches of heavy, wet snow on the ground. More is coming. Gah. I do NOT look forward to the drive home...

On the good side, though- Migod, it is beautiful out there. the trees are outlined in white, the HUGE flakes of snow coming down, and it is so QUIET...

Sometimes in weather like this, I get kinda moody, and start dwelling on things... Not this time apparently, not yet at least.

I think I'm just gonna let it melt, rather than try to shovel it- I do NOT need to throw my back out.
