It looks like the wireless part of the wireless router here has died. It still operates as the pass-through for the hardwired 'net stuff, but I can't connect wirelessly with the laptop at all anymore. I'll talk to [livejournal.com profile] mirrdae when he gets home. :P

NaNo Post.

Well, today I fell behind. I think I've gotten about1500 words done, but I've hit a roadblock that I have to think through, and on top of that I Just. Don't. Want. To. I'll catch up tonight and tomorrow, and post each (roughly) 3000 word section separately.

Other than that, we seem to have cured our 'net difficulties- all it took was a new 'Telephony' modem from Comcast. And yes, that IS what they're called. I think it's silly too.

Got back from the con last night at about 11 PM. The trip was uneventful, aside from the idiot taxi driver dropping me at the wrong station (the Amtrak/Metra station is in Glenview, and the station he dropped me at, just a Metra station, was down the track in the VILLAGE of Glenview). Fortunately, it was right on the line and taking a single stop trip on the Metra fixed things. It was STILL stupid. For future reference: Get the cab number, the driver's name, and note pickup/dropoff times so that they can track the mistake and not do it again!

Anyway, I got home. Cleaned up the mess of dishes in the kitchen, refilled the dry food bowls and water for the cats, and relaxed. Whuf. The con was a lot of fun, but I'm glad to be home.

Which brings us to today.

The house is now using Comcast for phone, internet and cable! Qworst has been told to fuck off with details why, and all that's left is sending the modem back and switching my Visi account (my former provider) to a basic dialup account to maintain my email and (horribly out of date) website.

WE KAN HAZ INTERNETZ! :)

Other than that, I have a headache. I'll live, and things seem generally good. I go back to work tonight, whoopie, but I only work two nights this week.

Well, last night the laptop decided that it didn't want to connect to the two wireless points in the house. It WOULD connect to the Minneapolis wireless, but not ours. I airblasted out the dust and crime, reseated the airport card and rebooted, even did a total powerdown by removing the battery. Nada. Fast forward to today. I find out from [livejournal.com profile] mirrdae that the second of our two wireless routers is also our DNS server. He tells me to reboot it, and I do... But no go. Then I get it in my head to do the same with the main wireless- And its working! Yay!

So, the laptop lives a while longer. However, I suspect that our Netgear wireless point may be starting to croak. O well, its cheaper to replace than a laptop. :)

We'll start with the good. Last night we had a small movie party, watching one truly atrocious film called Vampires Vs. Zombies, followed by the short feature on the same disc called 'Heads Are Gonna Roll', and rounded out by the palate-cleansing Dr. Horrible's Musical Blog. Attending were myself, [livejournal.com profile] zxizaraxii, [livejournal.com profile] joshuwain, [livejournal.com profile] khirsahdrgn, [livejournal.com profile] mirrdae and [livejournal.com profile] feezlekahn. [livejournal.com profile] ataramos joined in on the food but didn't watch the show.

[livejournal.com profile] joshuwain made spaghetti sauce, which was combined with the requisite pasta and browned cubed sirloin to round out the meal, mozzarella and parmesan cheese being available as well as good chewy french bread. I made the sirloin, which was simply cubed, breaded with seasoned flour and fried.

It was a good evening, and at this point the cleanup is pretty much done. The plan is to do this more often, whether with a meal or just snackage.

Other than that, I got the tree down and packed away.

Now, the bad. At work we've been til now able to 'cheat' and bring in computers and such, and we abused the privilege by connecting to the internet. Now this would have been tolerable IF my coworkers had a single clue as to what they were doing. Apparently, someone managed to knock the entire net-connection for the Comm Center off line for the entire day today. So, the bosses know of the misdeeds of the guards now, and ALL privileges have been revoked. No computers in the office, no books, no nothing. Which means people falling asleep is going to increase exponentially. It also means that I'm going to start looking for another account, as without at least something vaguely 'nice' available, it's a hellhole.

I admit that this is partially my fault. I was stupid enough to listen to coworkers, INCLUDING one of the supervisors, who said that 'as long as we're surreptitious, no problem'. Well, now its a problem. At least I can honestly say that I wasn't a cause of the disaster, just a participant in misdeeds.

So this means I'll not be online for the foreseeable future from work, and it also means I'll likely not be doing much in terms of writing either, at least til I work out how to focus on it here at home with all the distractions here.

Am I complaining? Nope. We fucked up. No doubt. But I'm also not staying at Baker if I can help it. I've worked night shift long enough to KNOW you have to have something to keep you going. Even if its just a little music or a magazine or whatever. Maybe I'll try to get back in at Riverplace- no internet, but I'd be able to have the laptop. And tunes for that matter. I'll check into it on Monday after my shift. I may call Riverplace and talk to the supervisor there and see if they need someone too, today. We'll see what happens.

QWest...

... Has a nasty little policy when they disconnect services for nonpayment. They don't notify you, and they throw the switch AFTER their contact-hours are over. How do I know this? I had an overdue bill, and tonight they cut my DSL. I'm online via an additional $9.95 paid to the Minneapolis WiFi network for 24 hours of service, which I paid so that I could pay the damn bill- Their billing offices are closed too! Even fucking Comcast can take payments after-hours and has 24/7 tech support!

It was my fault to have not made the payment. But their policy here is fucked.

They got an earful on their help-chat (which couldn't help me), on their contact-line (who couldn't see the illogic of connecting me to a CLOSED office), and tomorrow morning when I get home I'm gonna light a fucking fire- I better have my goddamned DSL back near-instantly.

To the roommates- Sorry for the trouble. I had no idea that this would happen, and had been aiming to make a payment in the morning anyway. :P

edit: They cut the DSL at 7:30, I was on the phone with Visi til 8:30, and THEY couldn't find the issue so I called QWest, who finally (with an operator who only barely spoke english- not necessarily foreign, just unintelligible) told me I needed to make a payment (Which I'd done) and kept trying to connect me with offices that were closed (THEY told me they were closed, and STILL tried to insist on connecting me)! Gods. THEN I went to the online help-chat, which told me exactly ZERO. Bleh.

I'm on the Net from work! ...For this week and next at least.

Whee?

I decided to watch 'Van Helsing', just to see what it was like, seeing as I have the movie...

Oboy.

How could a movie this bad actually make it to production? The only two good actors were Jackman and his sidekick, the female lead... Wow. I totally didn't care about her or her final disposition, the villian gave cartoons a bad name...

I could go on for some time. I will say I liked the design for their version of the Frankenstein's Monster, and of the werewolves... And the CGI and sets were at least okay. Beyond that, ugh.

Well, last night as usual I tried to get on line. No dice. Apparently the wireless router that I've been sponging off of was interfered with just enough by the weather that I could FIND the signal, but I couldn't actually connect. I tried multiple times, but it just wasn't enough. O well. So, I cleaned out some of the crap on my hard drive like duplicate files, rearranged some folder-contents, and looked back at my old Levin's Realm campaign-world.

I'd forgotten I'd done a synopsis of the first run! I'd also forgotten that in the first run there were only two players present. Its got me thinking about restarting the campaign from ground zero, as a 'run-whenever' campaign with players from the household and local area, as opposed to the Sunday group who've already played through the stuff I'll likely begin with.

I've never finished the maps that I wanted to have for the world, and there are still some countries on the main landmass to define, but that I can work on. I especially want to map out, at least in basic, the city of Vinvale and the Keep; its where the campaign is at least initially centered, and I really should have an idea of where things are located. I'll prolly post some of the world-backgrund and such here later, if I decide to go forward with this.

In any event, for those who are interested, here is the synopsis of the first run. Fortunately, it shouldn't significantly impact anything if the new players read it- it was almost all roleplay and social actions. Our Heroes are Jothan (Played by Mike M.), A human bard seeking the world for his words, and Galin, a warrior Dwarf who follows a path which perhaps leads to his serving as a cleric of Moradin. :)

I'm online from work! And I'm not breaking the rules doing it! Ha!

I found a wireless connection. Hee. At least for now. Usually I can't get a strong enough signal. :)

I just got a call from my new Area Manager. I'll be working next week and thereafter. :) Next week is just a filler-shift tho, and will be on 2nd shift- the regular guard there has to go to California on a family emergency, so they need me there to cover. That'll be Monday training, and Wednesday to Sunday, 2nd shift. After that, I'll be on an overnight at River Place, which is a retail area.

Both are a LOT closer to home, and I can have my laptop at both, too! Yay!

The bad part is it messes up Christmas at mom and dads. O well. At least I'll be paid for working the holiday. I think the permanent shift at River Place is a Midnight to 8, which will be nice. Don't know the days, tho. And its a lot of walking, like at the old account. feh.

I'm off til Monday next week. Long Weekend!

I'm going back to bed now.
